Vintage Lamps: Handel and Pairpoint
By Diane Downey of pregnancyornot.com
There were several less talented lamp competitors who followed in the footsteps of the great Tiffany Lamp Maker. However, the next best lamps in the Arts & Crafts era were probably made by Handel & Co. and Pairpoint Corp. The Handel Co. The Handel Co. was established by Philip Julius Handel in 1876. The lamps made by Handel were leaded like the Tiffany lamps, or painted with colorful scenes on the inside of the glass shades which glow when lit. Often the lamps have a molded signature in capital letters. The shades usually have a painted signature, design number and sometimes the artist’s name or initials. The Handel shades were mostly in a dome or cone shape with an image that was reverse-painted. The image had a hand-painted shade with a frosted “chipped” or sand-finished effect. The bases were made of white metal and pewter. Pairpoint Manufacturing Pairpoint Manufacturing was established in 1880. One of the popular Pairpoint selections is an all-glass lamp shade known now as “puffy”. The reason for this name is because shades of this type were mold-blown into plump floral forms before painting the insides. The puffies were produced in a wide variety of designs. THE PAIRPOINT CORPORATION was stamped on the inside or outer edge of some of the shades and also a “P” in a diamond, which was their logo. The Pairpoint shades were frosted before decoration and the base was made of bronze, silver plate, copper or glass.
