Teen Pregnancy Statistics By Diane Downey of pregnancyornot.com Did you know that the United States has the highest rate of teen pregnancy at the cost of at least $7 billion annually? A sexually active teen who does not use contraception has a 90 percent chance of pregnancy within one year. Teen mothers are less likely to finish high school (only one-third receive a high school diploma). Nearly 80 percent of unmarried teen mothers end up on welfare. Thirty-four percent of women become pregnant at least once before they turn 20 -- about 820,000 a year. Eight in ten of teen pregnancies are not planned and 79 percent are to unmarried teens. The children born to teenage mothers have lower birth weights and are more likely to perform poorly in school. They are also at the greatest risk of abuse and neglect. The sons of teen mothers are 13 percent more likely to end up in prison while teen daughters are 22 percent more likely to follow in their mother's footsteps and become teen mothers themselves.
