Popular Vintage Design Movements in History
By Diane Downey of pregnancyornot.com
Art-Nouveau Art-Nouveau, meaning “new art”, in French, began in the early 1890’s and continued on for the next 40 years thereafter. This period, popular in America and Europe, used flowing, sensuous female designs. Some of the artists most known during this period were Galle, Lalique and Tiffany. The Art-Nouveau style can be distinguished by the smooth, sensuous lines, usually with added florals and/or insects, and a feminine design. During this period, these designs were incorporated into almost everything produced, from art glass to furniture, silver and personal objects. Art-Deco The Art-Deco period followed the Art Nouveau period. However, the two periods overlap in time and style. The Art-Deco period was named after an exhibition, “l”Exposition Internationale des Arts Decorative et Industriels Modernes,” held in Paris in 1927. During the Art-Deco period, movie idols, skyscrapers and artists, such as Picasso and Legras, were popular. The designs of Art-Deco consisted of cornered objects with simple lines. In America and Europe, almost every item produced (ceramics, glass, furniture and metals) in the 1920’s and 1930’s had an Art-Deco design on it. Arts and Crafts The Arts and Crafts Movement started in 1895 and lasted until 1920. Some of the more popular Arts and Crafts leaders during this movement were Elbert Hubbard and his Roycrofters, the brothers Stickley, Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles and Henry Greene, George Niedecken, and Lucia and Arthur Mathews. This movement involved creating a much more individual and personal design and appearance.
