Mascara Safety Did you know that using mascara the wrong way can cause eye injuries or infections? However, the most serious risk that mascara poses is scratching your eye with the mascara wand, which could in turn cause an infection from the germs on the wand. Here are some mascara safety tips: · Do not apply mascara in any moving vehicle. If you hit a bump or suddenly stop, it's easy to scratch your eye. · Do not apply mascara too close to the roots. You could block the glands on the eyelids (which help create tears) and your eyes might not get the lubrication needed. This could then cause a painful condition called dry eye which can affect your vision. · If you wear contacts, stay away from lash-extending mascaras. The contact lens can trap particles beneath it which could scratch the cornea and cause an infection. · Do not leave mascara in temperatures above 85° F(29° C) because the heat may cause bacteria to grow. · If your mascara gets dry, don't add any liquid to it - especially saliva. This can also cause an infection from germs. · Don't share your mascara with anyone. You would also be sharing germs and could end up with conjunctivitis or other infection. · Before going to bed, remove all mascara, and any other make-up. Some of the mascara can get into your eyes and cause an infection. · When mascara gets old, it's more likely to have germs. Get rid of it after three months.
