Home Pregnancy Tests
By Diane Downey of pregnancyornot.com
How Home Pregnancy Tests Work Home pregnancy tests can recognize a hormone (called human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG) in the urine which is there only when a woman is pregnant. When a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, the hormone, hCG, is created in her body. This will usually happen about 6 days after conception. However, studies show that in some women, embryo implantation doesn't occur until later. The hCG amount increases steadily every day that a woman is pregnant. When You Should Take a Home Pregnancy Test Many home pregnancy tests claim they can tell if you're pregnant on the day you expect your period. But a recent study shows that most do not give accurate results this early in pregnancy. A more accurate answer will be given after waiting one week after a missed period. If women test too early in their pregnancy, the result of their home pregnancy test could be negative. If there are problems in the pregnancy, the amount of hCG in the urine can also be affected. It is recommended that women take the test again in a few days or a week. Accuracy of Home Pregnancy Tests The accuracy of home pregnancy tests depends on the woman. All women differ when it comes to their menstrual cycle, therefore, the test results will also be different. The accuracy of home pregnancy tests depends on the woman. All women differ when it comes to their menstrual cycle, therefore, the test results will also be different. Normal menstrual cycle length in adult women is anywhere from 21 to 35 days. Embryos will also implant in the uterus at different times. Other things can also affect the accuracy. Most prescription and over-the-counter medications, including birth control pills, shouldn’t affect the results of home pregnancy tests. However, medications that have the hormone hCG in them (including some infertility medications) can give a false positive test result. Many of the home pregnancy tests say that they are 99% accurate on the first day that a woman has missed her period. However research shows that most of the home pregnancy tests do not always detect the low levels of hCG which is usually there on that first day. Best Rated Home Pregnancy Tests According to the most recent Consumer Reports data, First Response Early Result and Clear Choice Pregnancy Tests rated the highest in hCG sensitivity. Answer was next on the list, but it was noted that the test was messy to use. Where to Buy Home Pregnancy Tests You can buy pregnancy tests online and at most drugstores or grocery stores over-the-counter. Home pregnancy tests are reliable, personal, reasonably priced and simple to use. Tests can cost anywhere from about $10.00 all the way up to close to $20.00, depending on the brand. However, you can find just about any brand you want on ebay for a lot less.
